The flag was designed through a series of votes on the AVEN forums. It was founded by David Jay in 2001 to create public acceptance of asexuality and grow the community.
The Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) is the largest and most established online community for asexual people. The white stripe represents allosexuality, and the purple stripe represents the asexual community. The grey stripe represents other ace-spectrum identities including demisexuality and grey-asexuality. This flag has four even horizontal stripes which are colored (top to bottom) black (#000000), grey (#A3A3A3), white (#FFFFFF), and purple (violet #800080).
